Just back from the play "The Receptionist" at Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC). A brief night (a short 90 minutes) at the theatre but a powerful one. The performances were strong and left the patrons talking about what had happened and what they thought would happen next which I think is a good thing.
The staging and direction worked for me. How powerful can a performance be while sitting behind a reception desk?... Jayne Houdyshell certainly managed to grab your attention and hold it. The dialogue was really punchy (Adam Bock) and moved along giving Kendra Kassebaum and Jayne Houyshell a lot to work with.
The final scene with the changing set and lighting really left me wondering what would happen to the poor receptionist or was she so entirely innocent?!
