A cool Sunday

The chilled air makes for lovely blue skies and lots of steam

Then the light in mid afternoon gives such great long shadows.

Going home

We had a long day with these intrepid folk traveling to Harlem via very unreliable public transport.

The day after...

The day after the snow storm the impact was felt!

Walking back home from meeting with Maria I spotted this piece of street shopping! Who has a church pew in their apartment and decides to piff it out onto the footpath- getting ready for the Epiffany ?
The daily commute in particular. The subways were running but the problem was the uncleared snow on the track and the freezing of the switches...the upshot for me was a bit of a long wait and the crowd on the platform.

Snow Day

It was a day i wasn't going to go to work anyway but it was declared a snow day. A northward shift in the jet stream in the Northern Pacific around Alaska was the cause. The Arctic jet stream is an area of fast-moving wind high in the atmosphere that acts as a barrier between regions of cold and warmer air.
The northward surge in the jet stream around Alaska means temperatures are actually warmer there than normal. This movement then caused another section of the jet stream to dip into the Eastern US, bringing with it freezing air from around Hudson Bay.

The second factor is that a “bomb cyclone” formed off the East Coast of the United States.
It means there’s a weather system dropping pressure very, very quickly. When pressure drops, storms intensify and spin counterclockwise (a.k.a. form a cyclone). The drop in pressure is due, in part, to the strong differences in temperature between the warmer Gulf Stream in the Atlantic and the frigid temperatures on land.

This is my glass bird with the level of snow build up on the window sill of my bedroom.
