Tuesday still on hols!

Julia did the noble thing.... got up early and joined the queue for the free "concert" in Central Park. She and Annie had spotted an ad for Whitney Houston free concert on their way back from the airport last week. Unfortunately Annie was sick (hope you're getting better Annie) so Julia waited in the queue on the east-side of the park- once we discovered it was the east side we were meant to be at we found her and joined the throng waiting to make their way in to the area for the Good Morning America segment.
Because Julia was early enough and nearish to the front of the line....we ended up being able to sit in the stands which are raked and were, for a little while, in the shade. Armed with our give away advertising fans we settled in to reading our books and wait for the show to begin. The crowd continued to build and filled all this space, not sure whether it was because it was a free concert or whether the Whitney Houston fan base is very big in NYC but it was a big crowd.
Eventually after TV warm ups (assisted by the warming sun!) Whitney arrived and sang a few numbers- probably the equivalent of one for every hour we waited!
But it was a really great experience both the singing, the music and the crowd who amused us in a number of ways- there was
  • the guy who came around with his own "radio" mike strutting his stuff and singing to the crowd
  • the woman at the back of the raked seating we were in who kept people out of the aisles and out of our way
  • the guy in the pink pinstripe seersucker suit- very dapper
  • the rather large woman in the large amount of hot pink
  • the large woman in the yellow who insisted on flapping her rather large arms about in time to the music- her arms were "lengthened" by long pink fingernails and the advertising fan!
It was over almost before it began so we wandered off to a shady part of Central Park to partake of our picnic repast. Entertainment was the order of the day!

This group of kids were having a grand time in the park overseen by their mums/nannies
We were certain it was all going to end in tears....
But no...
The bigger kids seemed to know just when to move on to something else
It was such a lovely time to be outside and such entertainment!
